What to Expect

Internet/WiFi Troubleshooting & Home Network Support

A calm, clear and practical service workflow for households experiencing slow internet, poor Wi‑Fi coverage, device connection problems, suspicious network activity, or general home internet frustration.

Our approach

Welcome. Mister IT is here to make your home internet clearer, safer and less stressful. This page explains what you can expect when we visit to troubleshoot an internet, Wi‑Fi, home network or device connectivity issue.

The goal is simple: understand the problem, explain it clearly, and give you practical options without confusing jargon or unnecessary upselling.

Internet Troubleshooting Process

Step-by-step, calm and easy to understand.

1

We listen first

Before touching anything, we ask about the problems you are seeing and who uses the internet in the home. This may include work-from-home needs, kids’ devices, seniors’ devices, smart TVs, printers, CCTV, phones, tablets and computers.

2

We check the current setup

We look at your modem/router, Wi‑Fi coverage, cabling, device connections and obvious problem areas.
We do not make unnecessary changes.
The first priority is to understand what is already in place.
MisterIT uses the same Enterprise Industry Standard Monitoring Tools and Utilities, that i have used throughout my 40 year career in supporting Corporate Infrastructure, to quickly identify problems on your Home Network, saving you time and money.
These tools are essential in building, secure Home Networks that perform optimally and provide the functionality that is needed to manage access to your Network and the Internet.

3

We test performance properly

We test internet speed, Wi‑Fi signal strength, device connectivity and common causes of slow or unreliable service. Where helpful, we test from more than one room and more than one device.

4

We explain what we find

You will be told what appears to be happening in plain English. For example, whether the issue looks like poor Wi‑Fi coverage, router configuration, a faulty device, interference, ISP-related problems, or unusual network behaviour.

5

We test before we leave

After any changes are made, we test key devices again. We check that internet access works, Wi‑Fi is behaving as expected, and common devices such as phones, laptops, printers or TVs can still connect.

Internet Access Controls

Do you have concerns around protecting your children from nefarious or undesirable Internet content?

  • Would an easy-to-view web page that reports per-device Internet activity be of any value to you?
    • A breakdown of Internet sites visited.
    • The date and time when those Internet sites were visited.
    • The device that was used to view those Internet sites.
    • The amount of data that was transmitted to/from the Internet site. This can be extremely useful when attempting to diagnose poor Internet performance.
  • For example, whilst recently assisting a customer with intermittent poor Internet performance, and after having completed a review of their website access patterns using the Net Detective, we were able to identify useful activity patterns.
  • Would having the capability to restrict or block specific devices, or indeed all network devices, from accessing certain websites with inappropriate content via an easy-to-use web page be of interest to you?
The Net Detective can provide this level of control.

Case Study

I recently assisted a customer who was experiencing intermittent poor internet performance at certain times of the day. As is the case with most homes, they had a mixture of devices connected to their wireless network, including smartphones, laptops, desktop PCs, smart TVs, solar inverters and wireless cameras.

I deployed the Net Detective on the customer's network and left it to collate valuable information relating to local device website utilisation.

On reviewing the logs collected by the Net Detective, I was able to identify a desktop PC downloading large amounts of data from a specific website at precisely the same time the internet performance was degraded.

Further investigation revealed a Windows PC that was initiating software updates that had been automatically scheduled by default since installation. During these download periods, internet performance was considerably impaired.

We re-scheduled the downloads to occur during periods of low internet utilisation and the problem was resolved. The Net Detective was instrumental in capturing the diagnostic information that directly led to the issue being identified. Without that visibility, finding the offending network device would have been extremely difficult.

Privacy & Transparency

We respect your privacy. Our role is to troubleshoot and improve your home network, not to intrude into your personal life.

We do not:

  • • Read your emails or messages
  • • Access your private files or photos without permission
  • • Ask for passwords unless genuinely required
  • • Secretly monitor personal activity

We do:

  • • Explain what we are checking
  • • Ask before making changes
  • • Treat your data confidentially
  • • Keep advice practical and understandable

If network visibility or filtering tools are installed, we explain what information they show, what they do not show, and how they can be managed.

Simple controls, explained clearly

Where appropriate, we can help set up practical tools to make your home internet easier to understand and safer to use.

  • ✔ Filter unsafe or inappropriate content
  • ✔ Identify unknown devices on the network
  • ✔ Understand usage trends without unnecessary detail
  • ✔ Improve basic router and Wi‑Fi security
  • ✔ Make it easier to explain problems to your ISP

Education without overload

We teach just enough so you feel confident, not overwhelmed.

You will be shown what changed, why it was changed, and what you may notice afterwards. Any instructions are kept practical and relevant to your household.

The aim is to reduce confusion and anxiety, not create more technical work for you.

How We’re Different From Your ISP

Your internet provider supplies the connection. We help you understand what is happening inside the home.

Your ISP usually focuses on:

  • • Whether the internet connection is active
  • • Basic modem/router support
  • • Line speed or service availability
  • • Limited router-level controls
  • • Remote scripts and standard troubleshooting

Mister IT focuses on:

  • • How the internet performs inside your home
  • • Wi‑Fi coverage and device connection issues
  • • Network layout and practical improvements
  • • Explaining problems in plain language
  • • Representing your interests when dealing with providers

Ongoing Support & Reassurance

We provide clear contact details for follow-up questions, updates, maintenance and troubleshooting. Our goal is to keep your home internet running safely, reliably and calmly.
